Kathmandu – Lhasa: Ultimate Tibet Roadtrip | 8 Days
This unique 8 day Tibet roadtrip will take you on a journey on the Friendship Highway through some of the most stunning landscapes on the planet. You will pass small Tibetan settlements, nomadic herdsmen wandering across the wide arid plains and awe-inspiring mountain peaks. Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet is considered the heart of Tibet and is filled with unparalleled history, culture, and tradition. The legendary Potala Palace dominates the skyline with its powerful and ancient architecture. The countless monasteries and temples surrounding the city such as the amazing Jokhang Temple and Drepung allow visitors to experience real Tibetan Buddhism first hand. Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Nyalam – 3600m
The trip commences from the heart of Kathmandu (Thamel) at around 6am. We will drive along the Arniko Highway and enjoy the beautiful Nepalese countryside to Kodari – the Nepal Tibet border. After completing the necessary border formalities at the both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides, you will change your vehicle and start the two hours adventurous uphill drive to Nyalam. Stay overnight at a guesthouse.
Day 02: Drive from Nyalam to Tingri – 4350m
After breakfast at the guesthouse, your first day in Tibet starts with an adventure drive through lush, green lower hills into the dry, arid landscape of the Tibetan Plateau. The drive crosses several high passes including the Lalung La 5050m from where you can have a breathtaking panorama of the Himalayan range including Mt Everest – a fitting backdrop to the vastness of the Tibetan Plateau. Day 03: Drive from Tingri to Shigatse – 3900m (245km)
After breakfast, we will continue our adventure road trip passing by lonely monasteries and the camps of Tibetan nomadic herders. The drive crosses the highest pass of your journey, the Gyamtso La 5220m before descending once more to the barren splendor of the plains. Stay overnight at hotel in Shigatse – the second largest city of Tibet.
Day 04: Drive from Shigatse to Gyantse – 3950m (90 km)
Today, we will visit the stunning Tashilungpo Monastery, one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet, before taking a short and scenic drive to Gyantse – another historical city in Tibet. In Gyantse, we will visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum. Kumbum is a large gold-domed stupa. It is famous for its many chapels house an impressive array of Tibetan Buddhist murals. Stay overnight at a hotel in Gyantse.
Day 05: Drive from Gyantse to Lhasa – 3680m (265km)
After breakfast, start a long drive crossing the Karo La pass 5045m where you can see the awesome sight of a huge glacier up ahead. The road follows the bank of a beautiful turquoise lake – the Yamdrok-Tso, for about 20km. The trip crosses the Khamba La 4794m, and continues on to Lhasa the capital of Tibet. Stay overnight at a hotel in Lhasa.
Day 06: Full day sightseeing in Lhasa
We take a break from traveling today. Our first stop, we will visit the Jokhang temple. This temple is the most revered shrine in all of Tibet and is constantly bustling with devout worshippers. After lunch in the afternoon, we will visit Sera Monastery, a fifteenth-century sprawl of golden roofs and whitewashed walls. This well-preserved monastery is located just a few miles North of Lhasa and is home to several hundred monks. Stay overnight at the same hotel in Lhasa.
Day 07: Full day sightseeing in Lhasa
After breakfast, you will meet your Tibetan guide and visit Potala Palace. The palace is Lhasa’s cardinal landmark and is a wonder of Eastern architecture. Your first sight of this massive structure will be a magical moment remembered for years to come. It has been a palace since the fifth or sixth century and was once home to the Dalai Lama. In the afternoon you will visit the Drepung Monastery. Once the world’s largest monastery, home to 10,000 monks, the Drepung monastery is hidden in rocky ridges just beyond the city. Stay overnight at the same hotel in Lhasa.
Day 08: Fly back to Kathmandu or train/airplane to mainland China
After breakfast at the hotel, your guide and driver will drop you at either the train station or the airport for your next destination.
