Tilicho Lake Trek: 15 Days
The breathtaking Tilicho Lake is situated in the Manang District of Annapurna region of Nepal and resides at an elevation of 4,919 meters. As well as being the most diverse trek in the Annapurna area, the Tilicho Lake trek is also popular for its religious perspective. A huge number of Hindu worshippers from around the globe visit this lake for religious purposes.
This adventurous trek to Tilicho Lake is without a doubt, a glorious assortment of culture, religion and incredible landscapes with iconic views of the enormous Annapurna Himal Mountain range.
The dry and cold atmosphere of Manang will welcome you as you step off the airplane. This is ideal trekking weather for trekking in this underestimated region. Every day you will experience different climates as the trail starts from subtropical weather and ends in the snow-capped mountains. For the lovers of nature, it is a brilliant opportunity to see the lake at this altitude.
Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu (1,300m /4,264ft).
Upon your arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be welcomed by a representative from Travel Society Nepal. After sorting out your custom formalities (Visa, etc) you will be then transferred to the hotel. The representative will help you check into your designated hotel and give you some time to freshen up. After this, we will attend an orientation about your trek led by our Trekking leader over a typical Nepali welcome dinner that will include a cultural dance performed by the local women. You then return to your hotel for your first overnight stay at the hotel (D)
Day 02: Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation (1,300m /4,264ft).
Kathmandu is the cultural heart of Nepal and has been a famous destination for tourists ever since Nepal opened its borders to visitors. The city displays an interesting combination of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and Western influences in the valley. Patan and Bhaktapur, the two important neighboring cities bear much cultural and religious significance to Nepal’s landscape. There will be a full-day guided tour to the historic sights such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambunath) and Buddhists shrine (Buddha Nath). In the evening, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we meet our trek leader and other stuff for your adventure trip. Stay overnight at hotel. (B)
Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Besishahar (5 –6 hours)
In the morning, we will drive from Kathmandu for about 7 hours to Besishahar. We will be driving along the Trisili River where you will have gorgeous views of beautiful countryside, villages, farms, rivers and magnificent mountain landscapes. When we arrive at Besishahar, you will be able to have your first glimpse of the beautiful Himalayan mountain range. We stay overnight at guesthouse (B, L, D)
Day 04: Besishahar- Chame (6-7 hours)
From Besishahar, we start our trek up to Chame. This trail will take around 7 hours and follows the river Marshyadgdi upstream passing by the villages of Latamanang and Koto. We will stay overnight at a guesthouse (B, L, D)
Day 05: Chame – Pisang (5-6 hours)
Today you’ll experience a dramatic change of scenery. The trail follows a steep narrow valley through pine woods and small villages with several ups and downs till you reach the village of Bhartang. We continue the trail up to a bridge and cross the river where impressive curved rock faces of Paungda Danda awaits you. You will need to climb these to reach the village of Pisang. We stay overnight at guesthouse (B, L, D)
Day 06: Pisang -Manang (6-7 hours)
After Pisang, there are two routes that we can follow to reach Manang. The lower, less strenuous route follows the valley floor via Hongde. The upper route is almost 3 hours longer than the lower route, but the scenery is outstanding and well worth the climb! On the upper route, you will see panoramic views of towering peaks such as Annapurna 2, 3, 4, Pisang peak Gangapurna, and several others will definitely attract us. Passing carved Mani walls we arrive at the village of Manang. We stay overnight at guesthouse (B, L, D)
Day 07: Rest & Acclimatization day at Manang
It is important to have an extra day in Manang to acclimatize before climbing towards a higher altitude. It’s recommended that you take a short hike to help with acclimatizing. There are spectacular views of the majestic Himalayas peaks all around the Manang valley and there are lots of options for day walks around Manang. One possibility is to walk to Khangsar village on the way to Tilicho Lake or a longer walk to Ice Lake above Braga. Also worth visiting is the Himalayan Rescue Association to get some ideas about rapid mountain sickness. We stay overnight at guesthouse (B, L, D)
Day 08: From Manang to Tilicho Base Camp (7-8 hours)
From Manang, the trail ascends steeply and you will have to cross a couple of streams along the way. Finally, after 7-8 hours of trekking, you will reach Tilicho Base Camp – a peak of 4650m with incredible views of Tilicho Mountain and numerous other surrounding mountains. We stay overnight at a guesthouse and prepare for our trek to Tilicho Lake tomorrow. (B, L, D)
Day 09: Base Camp to Tilicho Lake (5-6 hours)
The trail to the Tilicho ascends up to 4710m. There are gorgeous views of Tarkeghyang, Gangapurna, and the Khangsar Kang to distract you until you reach Tilicho Lake. This lake is the highest in the world at 4920m and is definitely a dramatic sight. Sometimes its turquoise water reflects the surrounding peaks but more often it’s frozen solid. After spending some time at Tilicho Lake, we will trek back down to Tilicho Base Camp for an overnight stay. (B, L, D)
Day 10: From Tilicho Base Camp to Yak Kharka (4-5 hours)
After celebrating our trekking achievement at Tilicho, we begin to descend down to Yak Kharka today. The trails starts with a simple hike down to Sri Kharka and along the Marsyangdi River. The trail keeps on moving out of the Marsyangdi Valley. Along the way, expect to see yaks grazing on the land as you arrive at Yak Kharka. You will stay overnight in Yak Kharka. (B, L, D)
DAY 11: From Yak Kharka to Thorang Phedi (3-4 hours)
This short trek requires you to cross over to Ledar Village via suspension bridge before steeply ascending towards Thorang Phedi. Thorang Phedi is at the lower region of Thorong La Pass. From here you will be able to see Mt. Syagang, Gundang, Khatungkan, and Thorong Peak. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot herds of blue mountain sheep at Thorang Phedi. We stay overnight at a guesthouse. (B, L, D)
Day 12: From Thorang Phedi to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass (7-8 hours)
We start around 4am this morning as we conquer Thorong La Pass – one of the highest passes in the world. We will stop briefly to watch the sunrise climbing up above the snow-capped mountains. This will one of the most incredible sights so have your camera ready! We aim to reach the top of the pass by 9-10am. Expect the weather to be cold and windy at the top. Thorang La Pass will be covered with colourful prayer flags, chortens and petition banners and is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. After a 4 hour descend, we will reach our destination – Muktinath. Muktinath is a popular spot for people who worship Hinduism and Buddhism. Worshippers believe that you will be free of your agonies and distresses after you visit this sacred site. You can wash under the 108 holy waterspouts around the sanctuary. A great way to finish your trek! Tonight, you will stay at a hotel to rest and recuperate. (B, L, D)
Day 13: Drive Muktinath – Beni ( 7-8 hours drive)
Today, we drive from Muktinath to Beni alongside the Kaligandaki River.
